News blog has returned to normal. After a brief encounter with some "enhancement" drug spammers we have officially flushed out the bastards. Sorry for any confusion, if you missed it, it was quite a riot there for a minute.

We do plating on almost anything that can be plated. However we do not do plating on wheels. There are plating companies that specialize in doing wheels. They have the anode fixtures made for almost any kind of wheel made. They do over 10,000 wheels a month!! We do parts that need special attention. Such as on classic and custom motorcycles and cars.

We strip the parts down to bare metal and polish them out to a mirror finish. Then we copper plate them. If the parts are particularly bad we will put an heavy acid copper on them and buff the copper to fill in pits or make a foundation for soldering fractures and cracks. Depending how badly deteriorated will determine how many times we will have to acid copper plate a part. Sometimes parts are in such bad shape that it is almost impossible to get them pit free. Of course with enough money almost anything can be done. In most cases it is better to find parts that are in fairly good shape before spending money on having them plated. Sometimes I will have a customer bring in some badly pitted pot metal and I will explain to them that it is almost impossible to get all the pits out. The parts will require repeated acid copper plating and polishing to fill in the pits. Each time a part is copper plated and buffed it takes time and materiel. That is why a part like a hood ornament can cost from $80 to $1800 or more. It just depends on the shape it is in.

So if you want to get something chrome plated, especially pot metal, try to find good parts to start with. The 1952 Pontiac hood ornament seen above cost over $250 to do. And it is still not quite perfect.

Quite often I get calls to do wheels. I do not do wheels because they require a specific anode fixture that is designed for each wheel configuration. There are places that specialize in doing wheels. They may do as many as 10,000 wheels a month and have large automatic lines for stripping, polishing and plating wheels. It would not be practical for us to try and compete with their assembly line operations.
Our specialty is doing custom designed parts and restoration of non replaceable parts. I get customers who come in and ask why we charge more than some other platers.
When you want the best you have to pay for it. We put more effort into our polishing making sure to get out all the flaws and grinding marks that can possibly be gotten out. We may have to copper plate a part several times mush buffing it between each copper plating. Every time we copper plate a part it is in the copper plating tank for several hours. Some parts need to be soldered and copper plated repeatedly to repair flaws and cracks. Particularly when working with pot metal. The low temperature rods and fluxes for this type of work is very expensive.
All this adds up to more time and expense. But it is the only way to make the parts look good.
I am currently working on a rotted out window frame and very corroded pot metal trim parts. When I am done I will be posting the before, during and after pictures of them.

We are currently experiencing some electrical problems. We hope to have them resolved in a few days. In the mean time we ask our customers to not try and drop by or deliver any parts. We have been in and out of the shop getting the parts to do our repairs and may not be there to receive your work.

Chrome plating in your garage!!! Cover ups and conspiracies!!!
I was born into a custom chrome plating business. I worked there as a young teenager. I'm in my mid fifties now. Custom chrome plating is all I have ever done. I run the business. I know every aspect. I have done everything. Metal stripping, polishing, bead blasting, cleaning and activating for plating, cyanide copper plating, acid copper plating, nickel plating, chrome plating, customer relations, reporting to various agencies (EPA, DNR, local sewer districts, Etc.) All accounting and payroll. I know I am missing a few things, but I think Ted will understand.

And now Tyrone says its a big cover up to deny people a chance to make millions in their garage. Oh Lord! Maybe we need a Canadian disposal place that doesn't require permits and testing as inferred in an earlier comment. To think all the years wasted when I could have done it in my garage and made millions!
